I posted this on FB, but I wanted to share it with those of you only on LJ as well. The linked study is fascinating and revealing.

Who are Republicans? Evangelicals represent the largest group, followed by Republicans who identify with the tea party movement. “Moderates,” the third group, make up about a quarter of the party’s base, according to the pollsters.

My brain won't accept the fact that there are that many evangelical xtians in this country.

The concept that somehow Democrats' main motivation is to get more people to be dependent just breaks my brain. Extending health care coverage to more people is about human rights, not about getting more people to suck at the government teat. We'd actually like more people to succeed because it increases the tax base. This study shows me why the only Republicans I can have a conversation with are the moderates.

Totally. I've been having an extended conversation with a couple of evangelical libertarians about how they reconcile Christianity and libertarianism causes brain pain as well. Time and time again, compassion and cooperation have proven itself to be the most reasonable choice in creating and maintaining healthy, livable societies. I find it telling that those who are the least likely to believe in biological evolution tend to be the most socially Darwinistic. Oy.

Funny that we both mentioned brains... conservatives and liberals actually do show brain differences.

That is very interesting. That word cloud on the study itself was so revealing as to the fearfulness that underlies contemporary conservative beliefs an d perceptions of the world.
